HOW TO: Voluminous Hair

Voluminous, bouncy hair is everyone's desire! It looks full of life and is a head turner anywhere. Hairstyles come and go but big, voluminous hair is here to stay. It flatters every look and style. While some of us are blessed with naturally voluminous hair, some of us can easily achieve it. Presenting some tips on how to achieve that full headed voluminous hair.

1. Volumizing hair wash routine - Read more on volumizing hair wash routine in my blog here.

2. Air dry hair - Air dry hair as much as possible. It is a sure shot method of drying hair that won't leave your hair a frizzy mess or a flat snuff. It is the least damaging way to dry hair as well. If you need to style your hair, wait till hair is at least 80% air dried. Wet hair is most vulnerable to damage. Damaged hair either goes limp and lifeless or frizzy and untamed.

3. Volumizing mousse - If using a blow dryer to set and style hair, use a volumizing mousse at the roots before blow drying. It will give a nice pouf to the roots while retaining a soft look. It will also eliminate frizz and give hair a light, airy feel.

4. Back combing/ Teasing - Back combing/ teasing involves a fine toothed comb to gently stroke (tease) the roots of the hair backwards or towards the scalp, starting about 2 inches from the roots. Gently back comb the crown area of the head for volume. It needs to be set by a hair spray to hold the tease in place for longer. The only disadvantage of this method is that it results in tangles and is a bit damaging to the hair. Therefore, back comb ever so slightly.

5. Flip head upside down - Flipping head upside down is a temporary method to create some fullness in the hair. Best done as a quick fix before a photo. Effects last only as long as the hair settles into its natural state (few seconds to minutes). If you have styled your hair, it may completely destroy it. Suitable for fine hair, for a just-out-of-the-bed look.

6. Hair curling - Curl hair with either a heatless or heat method using a large barrel curler or rollers for big curls/ waves. Loosen the waves by brushing through them with your fingers for bouncy effect.

7. Beer rinse - Using a pint (or as much required as per length and thickness of hair) of beer as a last rinse in the shampoo routine adds volume to limp hair. It is also an excellent conditioner and hair shine booster.

8. Detangle - Detangle hair using fingers whenever possible or a wide toothed comb to gently detangle hair. This will avoid unnecessary strain on the roots and lessen fall out. Brush hair away from the face rather than downwards to create a lift in the hair.

9. Sea salt spray - Sea salt adds texture and lift to flat hair. For a DIY and how to use, read the blog here.

10. Avoid tight hairstyles - Avoid pulling hair in tight hairstyles often like ponytails, braids, buns, etc. This will pull the hair at the roots causing breakage and flattening the volume at the roots and the crown which naturally has the most volume.

11. Side part hair - Center parting tends to create flatter looks that are more polished and suitable for formal looks. Side parting creates a voluminous look and helps the person wearing it look younger.

12. Volumizing aids - Volumizing aids like Bumpits, Puff makers, Hair extensions, etc. will add some volume and thickness in natural hair.
